Creeping Toward The Holidays

It's been very fall-like here. Even though the daytime temperatures are still pretty warm, it's been overcast and breezy. The leaves are blowing down the street and piling up against the fence. When the dogs were pups they loved to chase the leaves, but now they barely glance at them.

One thing I like about fall is that my urge to cook and bake comes back. It hides all summer when it's too hot to bother. Last week the house smelled of apples, today I baked a loaf of bread with Italian seasoning. The house smells like yeast and spices and is very pleasant. The smells are driving the dogs crazy, though. They act as if they're starving all the time and try to push feeding time up by an hour or more.

I know winter and the holidays are on the way. My faithful old (35 year old) Christmas cactus is in bloom. The back of the plant is entirely in flower and the front has lots of buds that'll open in a week or two. If she follows her usual run, she'll continue flowering till May. Then from May till October or November she's just an ugly old plant near the window.

It looks like the turkey will defrost in time to cook it on Thursday and the dogs have been promised a big pot of turkey soup. Tomorrow I may do some more baking. Doesn't a house with fresh baked goods smell wonderful?

  5. Tomorrow is scramble day for Mom. No kidlets tomorrow but lots of baking to do to add to the festivities at our human sister's home.

Our cactus is late this year, no buds yet, not likely to be a Christmas bloom, but maybe some beauty for the New Year. Yours is gorgeous.

  6. It sounds like your house smells much better than our house. If you just send your address Franklin and I could hop a plane and be there in a few hours I be. If we can get past security, of course.

    lotsa licks, Lola

  9. Ah, the Christmas cactus - my mother-in-law grew one for at least thirty years in the place of honor at the front window. When she passed away in July I was given a few cuttings which are doing well (fortunately) and I hope to pass them on to my children. Happy Thanksgiving!

  10. I am impressed with how evenly you cut that bread. I wish I could bake edible stuff, but it's not my lot in life. Maybe I need a bread machine again.... g

  11. Looks like great bread, and I'm jealous of your Christmas cactus. Mine doesn't do much. I'm thinking of hitting it with some miracle gro just to see what happens.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.

  12. My Christmas cactus has flowers the exact shade of dime-store pink lipstick. It's in bloom now, too.

Have a great Thanksgiving, all of you!

  14. Ah yes....good cooking/baking weather at last! Yesterday I made stew, my special homemade spiced cranberry sauce, and, because, one thing leads to another....orange cupcakes.

  16. What a cool Christmas cactus! I'd never seen one before.

I also love baking more in the fall/winter. It might have something to do with how our oven heats up the whole house, so I don't feel much like roasting in the summer.

I love the smell of apples. I think I'll be baking something or another by the end of the week :)

  17. PS ~ Thanks for telling me that I'm not the only one who gets super anxious before dog shows! I feel a lot better knowing I'm not alone. I'm fine in stressful situations, but it's something about a dog show that makes me literally sick to my stomach.

  18. I have a cactus just like that, and it flowers beautifully, but I guess we in the southern hemisphere wouldn't call it a Christmas cactus, as it blooms at the wrong time of the year. Do you by any chance know its Latin name?
