Our Guardian Tree

We lost our big boy, Monty, last December.

Monty spent his all too short life guarding us. He was genetically programmed to be a guard dog, part Chow Chow and part Doberman. He guarded everything from toys to the puppies to the house and of course, me. He was always on duty and seldom took the time out to play.

When one of our dogs dies, we plant a tree as a living memorial. Yesterday we bought Monty's tree and we had the perfect spot to plant it. The corner of the fence by the driveway is between the gate to the fenced in yard and the garage door.

Rob dug the hole and the soaker hose runs thru that area so the tree will get watered along with the butterfly garden.

He removed the tree from the pot and massaged it's roots before setting it in the hole.

This is a dwarf Alberta Spruce, a slow growing tree, but one that should do well in that area.

I gave it a good soaking and will continue to do so until it takes root.

Monty's tree is standing guard at the entrance to his yard and to the house. What better place for a guardian tree? I feel like Monty is still on duty, watching over us.

  1. What a beautiful tribute to a dear, working dog. I'm sure Monty is still there with you, watching over things. At least... I talk to the boys every morning...

  3. That looks like just the right tree - in just the right spot to remember Monty.
He sounds like a dog who took his job very seriously - he was certainly very handsome.

  4. Excellent choice for that spot, because it won't outgrow the space you have. A memorial tree is a lovely idea.
