We Won't Give Up

For those of you who have been following Samba's medical problems, you now that we've been fighting a kidney infection. She's taken three courses of antibiotics and had x-rays to look for stones or tumors. The x-rays looked really good with no sign of irregularities.

Last Wednesday she finished her third antibiotics, so Monday morning I took another urine sample to Dr B for analysis. I waited patiently hoping there would be no blood left in her urine. When Dr B came to talk to me I was disappointed again. He says we're moving in the right direction, but there is still a trace of blood.

This time we're trying a different course of action. On Friday I'll be dropping her Prednisone which may help. She's also taking both blueberry capsules and cranberry capsules daily and she's taking little white pills to try to increase the acidity of her urine. We're hoping that this combination will help her body to fight off the remaining infection.

These are the pills that Samba takes daily. She takes five of the little white ones three times a day. The others are for her MMM and her thyroid. Fortunately Samba is a good pill taker. I start all my dogs as puppies learning to take medicine so that in later life they don't fight taking a pill. I simply hand Samba each of her pills and she swallows them, no meat or cheese or peanut butter. She also doesn't get a treat afterwards, just a hug.

What a superstar - both you and Samba. Gretchen is the first dog I've had who simply refused to learn to take pills, and we started VERY early.

Both dogs get "eyeball" treats. Sissy was so freaked out when that left eye was still in place and blind... and we're suckers, too soft to try to retrain her now.

Paws crossed and Sis will sling drool that this round will do the trick and Samba will soon have purely golden urine...

We hope this will do the trick for Samba - she so deserves a break - and Mom too. None of us are very good about taking pills, but hiding it works for all but Phantom.

You're a good girl to take all of your pills without a fuss, Samba!

Thanks for the update on your girl--I was actually wondering about her a couple of days ago. I hope the infection is totally knocked out in the next round.

We sure hope this round works for Samba. She will be in our thoughts and prayers. Such a good pill taker she is... and that's a lot of pills even for a human.

Dom has always been a good pill taker until recently when one pill becomes too many. He has been good again lately.. and will take his pills wrapped in a piece of bread.. :D

I'm calling you the next time I get a puppy. Every single day and possibly multiple times a day. Hope we live closer in time zones.

I am so trained that when I cleaned Beau's ears the other day, he walked over and stared at the cookie tin and Would Not Leave the kitchen until he'd been given his cookie for being good. Who trained who? g

ps - I hope this combo works for Dear Samba.
