The Quiet Heroes

Today is September 11.

A day we will never forget.
There were many heroes that day, police, firefighters and ordinary citizens.

There were also canine heroes.

There were a number of search and rescue and cadaver dogs involved in the aftermath of the attacks. Many of them suffered health issues from the terrible conditions they worked in and had their lives cut short as a result.

One of our breed was present at the World Trade Center from the beginning.

If you'd like to read about the quiet heroes, the rescue dogs of 9/11, there is a book available which gives a short introduction to each of the dogs.
Dog Heroes of September 11: A Tribute to America's Search and Rescue Dogs
by Nona Kilgore Bauer and The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation

We are all grateful to them and will never forget them.

Lovely tribute - it really was a dreadful day - as you say so many heroes, human and canine. The pictures told the story.
Dogs not only involved in rescue work but also in comforting humans - lets face it that just comes naturally to dogs.

This is a very nice post. I still remember that day graphically. Because of that, my post was much more indirect. But I can appreciate yours as well. Well done!!!!

I knew that dogs were used that day and the weeks following for rescue and recovery but did not realize just how many and the wide range of breeds used. Thank you for the knowledge.
