Is Fall Almost Here?

We're in our sixth week of temperatures over ninety degrees, often well over 90, sometimes over 100. In that time we had one cool day of only 88, but the following day shot back up again.

We're all getting tired of the heat and we're getting cross and impatient with everything. That goes for humans and canines alike.

Yesterday, mid day we decided that the dogs needed a special treat. We bought a watermelon. It was a great melon, meaty and very sweet without a single seed. We both tasted it and it was good.

We took their bowls of melon outside. Note the brown crispy grass. Everyone was pretty excited to see what was in the bowls.

There was a lot of barking and jumping and general rowdiness.

Before he could distribute the treats, Rob had to get some order back into the pack.

They started to calm down and sit in anticipation.

He gave them a little talk about manners. I'm sure they were impressed.

When things were relatively calm, he distributed the bowls of watermelon.

It was very cold and sweet and and things got very quiet as everyone got busy enjoying the melon.

Tsar was the only one who wasn't eating. He looked at his and walked away. He just doesn't seem to like melon, but we always give him the option, in case he changes his mind.

Samba, of course, was the first one finished. I swear that dog inhales her food.

Rob still had Tsar's bowl and was handing out pieces to those who were finished.

A line was forming for extras.

They were sitting nicely awaiting their turns.

There weren't going to be any leftovers with this group.

Look how patient they are.

Last piece.

Noah can't believe it's all gone.

They decided to check the bowls again, just in case someone missed a piece.

They finally realized the snack was finished and they headed for the door to get back inside the air conditioning.

Sky thought is was a great snack for a hot day.

Fudge agreed that it was cool and refreshing and he thinks we should do it again soon.

We are buying one "personal seedless" watermelon a week to make the fur-girls happy. That, and 1/2 lb. of baby carrots...

The girls are very happy you introduced us to watermelon!

I love your dogs. Fudge looks like a pot stirrer. Rob's talk with the dogs about manners reminds me of telling Beau last night about onions and kidneys and how he can't live without it. He didn't believe me and wanted my meatball anyway. I held firm and ate it myself! g

What a well-behaved pack. There's alway loads of excitement whenever there's food. Kendra always cries. But we sit nicely--actually it's about the only time we DO sit nicely.

Love the pictures. We'll have to try watermelon when it gets hot. At the moment it's cold and wet.

You are lucky to have so many cute and obedient dogs! In malaysia, we can only have one dog in a house unless we're living in a bungalow then we can have 2. Anyway, love your watermelon-dogs! How good they are to sit and wait like a line of statues! Bingo can also sit and wait like your dogs, and i love the way he looks at the food when he's waiting. Bingo and benji's mummy :)

You think 88 is cooler and I think 88 is beastly hot! Tomorrow we are down for 70s! That is perfect to me.

On Saturday I bought a small seedless watermelon, but Stella had no interest in it. SO, I had to eat it! I always think of when I was a kid my Mother would make watermelon rind pickles which was my favorite next to the melon itself.

Cheers,

Jo and Stella

You always have so much fun at your house! Emma says she wants to move in with you.

I woke up this morning and it was only 71 degrees outside! Cool, crisp - heavenly! It's supposed to be hot again by Thursday, but I'm really enjoying today!

It has been raining here since Saturday. I know we've had at least 4" of rain, and it hasn't been above 65 since 4PM Saturday. I'm not ready to let summer go yet. But it looks like you all have fun with your watermelons!

I've very much welcomed the temps in the 70's that we've had the past couple of days!

We aren't big fans of watermelon here either. But TD and Ciara will eat a little bit.

Hey, the cool air is coming. We have 75, cloudy and breezy here today - we are really enjoying it because we know it won't last long.

Brown crispy grass? Yep, I can relate to that. We have the same in our summer. But, this winter has been amazing - crispy cold and lots of rain, so that the long-standing water restrictions have even been relaxed a bit. But, on the other hand, there's a state election in a couple of months. Call me cynical, if you like, but I think the sitting government will try to take the credit for the rain, lol.

So stay optimistic. Autumn does come!

Wow! A herd of Porties swimming in melon--it's not a sight for the faint-hearted! We're really impressed. Kerrys tend to swim in Guinness Stout, but we like watermelon too.

Cheers,

I ♥ your yard. It makes me feel so good to know that other dog-people don't have lush, green lawns - they look more like mine and that makes me feel better☺
