Enough Already!!

The past two years we've experienced a severe drought and we were worried about what might be in store for us this summer. Would we see dust storms?
Or possibly wildfires?
Well, good old Mother Nature had a surprise in store for us. We have floods.
For the past two and a half weeks it's been raining.
I don't mean a soft summer rain where you open the windows and enjoy the fresh air. I mean thunder and lightning and torrential rainfall.
For the past two and a half weeks we've gotten from 2 to 8 inches of rain per day. We've lived in this house for 14 years and it was always safe and dry, but last week when I came to the office, located in the basement, to post to my blog, the carpet was wet. The water came up over my shoes and sent us into emergency action.

I carried my sewing machine and many loads of books up to the library. We moved everything that we could onto shelves and other things had to be taken to other rooms. Rob vacuumed water out of the carpet for days. We finally got it all out of the carpet, but what a smell. We set up fans and now we have the air conditioning running because it's in the high eighties outside, but we have a space heater in the office trying to dry it out.

Today I walked into the room in my bare feet and it feels dry but there are more storms on the way. Our forecast says that next Thursday will be the first dry day. This morning we had a specialist come inspect the basement to see if we have structural damage such as a crack in the wall, but it seems that the ground is just so sodden that water is seeping thru the concrete. For now we'll keep trying to stay dry. When the rain finally stops we'll bring in dirt to build up the low spots in the yard around the foundation.
Forgive us if we don't post regularly while this is going on. Just know that we're safe and all the dogs are well. Lola is back to eating and feeling good. It's not easy getting ten dogs to run out in the rain several times a day and especially when we're trying to retrain the pups. Constant thunder doesn't help much either. We're also getting used to wet dog fragrance. It never seems to go away.

We live on an irrigated desert and haven't had rain since early spring. I'd offer to take some of yours, but it doesn't seem to work that way.

I hope your basement stays dry, but, more importantly, I hope the thunder doesn't spook the pack into fits of fright. My daughter got 8" of rain last Sunday in Philly, while we got a dribble, and it's only 120 miles. It's been pouring buckets here since about 7 last night, so you may have sent some of your rain to me.

Boy are you having a tough time of it! We send good thoughts to your neck of the woods and hope that the rains stop sooner than expected and that your home remains dry.

UGH... our thoughts are with you and we hope all is OK. We know far too well about wet basements and the nastiness related. Hope everything is ok and we'll send drying vibes your way.... Hugs!

We just saw on the news all the flooding in the US. Hope you're over the worst of it. SHE says getting all those dogs dried off AFTER they've been out must be a huge job!

We've been having just a bit of rain.

Oh you poor things. It's rained here every afternoon since the middle of May but at least the sun shines brightly most of the day. But that's typical Florida summer weather. Maybe it's time for you to start building an ark! We have our paws crossed that the rain stops soon.

We are most sorry to hear you are having such totally disgusting weather! After frying through much of July, we have since been in the 70s/50s and loving it all. So we can always make some room for you guys up here if you think you can stand the winter snow! Maybe it IS time to make a move!
Cheers and hugs,

It is just amazing to us how much rain you have gotten. We have had rain but it is all manageable. We sure hope it dries out soon. Can you rent one of those giant fans or a big industrial dehumidifier to dry out that area? You really have to be careful about mold and such. All paws crossed for the sun to come out and dry things up.

Yikes!! I'm glad you found the water before it was any worse, but we hope you don't have any more water where it doesn't belong.

We have had a very wet summer/year too, but not quite that bad. Crossing paws for dry days ahead.

PS - We thought of you last night when our idiot neighbors decided to set off fireworks.

Oh my gosh, Sue! So sorry to hear you are having to deal with this! Our rainfall total for the year to date is only 7.75 inches. I hope you get a break so you can shore up the area around your foundation. I imagine mold would be a concern. I'm glad to hear the dogs are all doing well despite the stress of the constant rain and thunder.

Oh man! It does get all consuming when you are having extreme weather and leaking houses. Ugh! Just stay safe and take care of yourselves.

Nothing one can do to protect against some of these weather patterns. I remember when we had the winter that wouldn't end and when the snow all melted our (normally dry) basement started filling up.

With the water you've been getting, there just isn't anyplace for it to go. Sounds like it's hot too. Double ick.
