Fudge's Furry Tales - The Dog That Cried Woof

Hi everybody, are you ready for another story?
Today I'm going to tell you a very good story that Mom says has an important lesson. I'm not so sure I agree with her, but you can decide.

Once upon a time in a faraway place lived a little striped dog named Spot.
Spot lived with his family of peeps and other dogs and birds too, I think. It was a big happy family like ours, but Spot thought he needed to be a super watchdog and warn his family of everything that came near their house.

When the big brown truck made a delivery Spot would race to the door barking, "Woof, woof, woof." His Mom would say "Be quiet Spot, that man is just bringing good stuff like new chew toys."
But Spot took his job seriously and when the white truck came with a delivery, he ran to the door barking, "Woof, woof, woof." His Dad said, " Stop barking Spot, that man just brought a box of dog treats for all you dogs."
But still Spot barked at every sound. He heard the big noisy truck that came to take the trash away and barked, "Woof, woof, woof." Mom and Dad both together said, "Quiet Spot, that's just the trash truck. We don't need that trash anymore."
Then Spot heard another noise and started barking again. This time it was the nice mailman bringing cards and letters and even dog treats, but still Spot barked, "Woof, woof, woof."

Even the other dogs in the house were getting sick of Spot's barking at every little sound. They just looked at him and thought, "Shut up, Spot."

Still Spot couldn't seem to control it. He even barked when the silly squirrels ran around on the deck. "Woof, woof, woof."
Mom and Dad had had it with all the barking and they didn't even bother to look out the window when Spot barked. The other dogs just buried their heads in their pillows and went back to sleep without even running to the door to check. Poor Spot, nobody paid any attention  to him.

One night Spot ran to the door and started barking, "Woof, woof, woof." Nobody came to see what he was barking at. He barked some more, "Woof, woof, woof." But Dad just grabbed the remote and turned the sound up on the TV.  Mom kept on knitting and counting and the other dogs ignored him. But this time it was important.
A cat burglar sneaked in and stole a whole tray of dog cookies cooling on the counter. When Mom went to check on them and put them in the cookie jar, she was surprised. Spot was dancing around and barking and telling her what happened.
Mom said, "Spot, you tried to tell us about the cat burglar, but because you bark so much at silly things, nobody listened. From now on you should try to think before you bark and we'll try to listen to what you're telling us. OK?"

Spot thought about what his Mom said and decided it was a pretty good idea and he tried very hard not to bark too much. But it sure wasn't easy.

Well, that story made me sleepy, so I guess I'll take a snooze in this chair and think this barking thing over in my head. Noah barks at everything so maybe this would be a good story for him to think about. Maybe Mom's right after all.
Your pal, Fudge

Brutus only barks when he wants to play and his boys are doing stupid things like reading. I didn't know that your Mom had told him this story while he was a baby in Virginia!

This story sort of reminds me of an old Family Circus cartoon where the dog is barking and the father tells him to be quiet. Off in the distance a burglar is sneaking out of the yard.

But a dog who barks at everything is the worse kind of watchdog.

Spot is pretty lucky, in our house Mom would have accused me of stealing the cooking and making a fuss over nothing. Beau - woof

....Oooh. That's a SKEERY story. 'Cause I bark all the time, and Momma shouts at me like that too. I'm trying to warn her! I don't know if I can NOT bark to make her listen... Yikes.

This story sounds real familiar to us, Fudge! It's our job to bark about anything and everything! Well, isn't it?! We'll never change!

Good story, but we have to BARK! We have different barks, though. We've been able to train her to know what we want. It was hard and maybe Spot have VERY DIM peeps.

Don't like the look of that cat.

At our house, barking is a good thing because my Mom doesn't hear much so if I go to her barking, She Knows Something Is UP!

Good story though Fudge, that cat burgular looks like Zkhat's brother Mort.

Great story, Fudge! Wrigs has me trained. He barks, then I call him into the kitchen and give him a treat. He promptly forgets all about whatever he was barking at. :-)

First of all, why did they call that dog Spot when he is covered in stripes? BOL

Lightning is the only one of us who barks. The rest of woo. Mom is happy about that.

And we wonder if there really WAS a cat burglar or if Spot was just a very smart thief.

My dogs only bark at important things. Like other dogs, people, wind, leaves falling, snow falling, airborne bacteria. You know, stuff that really matters.
