So Sorry

Rob and I took a late lunch today and went to Ziggies to see what Brendan had cooked up. On the way home the car in front of us swerved and we saw something lying in the street. As we got closer it was a dog. It had been hit by a car but was still alive. Rob put on the flashers and jumped out to see if he could help it. I ran to the back of the car to get a blanket. We had taken all the blankets out of the car last week when we had it serviced.

Two teenage girls were walking home from school and came over to help. One directed traffic around us and the other took off her jacket and we slid the dog onto the jacket and carried it to the car. It was a female Jack Russel Terrier and appeared to be badly hurt.

We drove to All Creatures, about a block and a half away, and I went in and told them we had a hit and run victim in the car. They went into action. One tech ran out to the car to carry the dog in. One went to pull Dr B out of an exam room to look at the dog. The dog had a collar but I hadn't noticed if there were tags. They said they would scan for a microchip.

A few minutes later Dr B came out. The dog had no tags and no chip. It was badly injured with probable spinal damage. He was giving it something for shock and pain and was having someone call the Humane Society to see if anyone had reported the dog missing. He told me that in 80% of this type of injury the dog doesn't make it even with extensive surgery. If the Humane Society had no record of anyone looking for the dog they would probably recommend euthanasia and he would handle it.

Rob and I both felt so bad. We had hoped that it was something minor that could be treated. We only hope that if one of our dogs was in trouble someone would stop and help it.

UPDATE: I just received a call from All Creatures and the owner was located. The dog is being transferred to the Emergency Clinic and it sounds like the owner is going to try to save it. Apparently her two JRTs escaped from their back yard and the one was injured. I saw the other one standing in a nearby yard uninjured and gave the owner the info that I had. Let's hope there is a happy ending afterall.

How terribly sad, I am so glad that you and your husband were there to at least offer some comfort. I don't understand how someone could have just driven off and left the poor thing.

so sad! At least you guys got it to the vet as quickly as you could. Perhaps she can be saved and the other one will find it's way home.

Makes for a tough afternoon.

That is so sad. I can't believe that someone would hit a dog in the street and leave it there. But it is all too common - happened to someone I know when their dog broke from its leash. Kudos to you guys for doing the right thing and helping this poor creature. Let us know if you hear any more about it..

pooooor little gurlie.. hope she makes it. jrt's are tough little buttons, so we will cross our fingers for a good update!!!

on the allergy end of things...you mentioned your guys feet..well theBUSTER'S tootsie was a puncture wound but having had wheatens for many years i know the "allergy" end of things too. if you aren't using nizerol as a soak -- try it on their feet 1x a day for a week or two..just make sure you dry completely. (selsun blue has nizerol in it!)
anyhow it does work..kills the yeast infection and dries up the itcheeez.

Oh, I'm choking back tears...

I'm going to read this to Sissy and Gretchen when I get home so they understand (yeah, right) why I won't let them run free.

Thank you for being so compassionate!

OH NO! My heart goes out to their family. May this pup have a full recovery, and the other pup be recovered safe and sound.

How horrible, scary, devastating, and heartbreaking. I"m glad you guys were there to step in, and the vet office was so quick on their feet.

All my health vibes, and good thoughts are headed for this family now.

Oh this is so sad....good job you and Rob were there....do keep us posted on progress of the little one if you hear, I hope she makes it.
My old dog was the victim of a hit & run....he was out walking with my elderly and deaf Grandfather, they hit him hard and didn't stop, leaving the old man to deal with it. Jasper had a broken pelvis and ended up losing a hind leg, luckily he was a young healthy dog who made a full recovery and lived for another 10 years!
On a happier note....we have our news up now on the blog....and a new website to deal with enquiries... dughallmor.com

Have a happy Friday!
