Blizzard

I'm from Central New York in the snowbelt. I expect February first to be  snowy and cold. I've spent many birthdays snowed in with no way to get together with family or friends. I'm told that the year I was born my Mom and I spent a couple extra days in the hospital because we couldn't get to our house. The roads weren't plowed. Once we did make it home, the snow continued and friends brought supplies to us by snowshoe.

My cousin's house in Mexico, NY
I remember several February first snow days when I was in school. Of course, my friends and I didn't let a little snow stop us from getting together. When you're a teenager, no amount of snow keeps you in.
I was scheduled to start a new job on one February first, only to get up that morning and find that about two feet of snow had fallen and we couldn't get to the driveway. It didn't matter because the company closed for a couple days due to the snow.
 My cousin's house
So here we are on February first again and here we are with snow again. It started about 4 AM with sleet followed by snow around 7 AM. The wind is blowing hard and it's bitterly cold. Even the dogs aren't arguing about coming inside after a run around.
 This is Lake Ontario.

Four year ago when the pups were little, we had an ice storm that knocked out our power for 12 days. Last night I took some precautions by lighting the gas stove and charging all the flashlights. We're stocked up on dog food and biscuits, the important thing, so we're staying home and staying warm.
My pups were happy to see the change in the weather. Saturday it was 65 degrees and sunny, now it looks like the Arctic.  Here's a little video of them this morning. Excuse the background noise, the wind is very strong.

Let's go in and dry off.

Those are scary snow pics. Mom remembers a horrific car trip she took the winter of either 1970 or '71 from western MA to Cornell University to bring Dad home from law school for Christmas - she says it was the scariest time she has ever had.

The blizzard is here now. We have several inches of snow already. The worst is yet to come. We are expecting about a foot , maybe a bit more. The wind is supposed to be bad, maybe creating five foot drifts. We are all glad to be home, Dad arrived a while ago. Our only problem is our first floor furnace is misbehaving. The serviceman is here now, we are just hoping he can fix it.

Stay safe and stay warm.

Great photos. We're having a nearly snowless winter. Plenty of cold, but the storms seem to be moving on either side of our Blue Ridge Mountains.

Wowzers. Good on you for getting out there anyway. I haven't seen so much snow since I was very, very young. Hopefully I don't again any time soon.

However, they are calling for another big storm tonight in Nova Scotia so I doubt I will be that lucky.

Stay safe!

Is this your birthday? My Jeffrey's birthday is Friday. Your upstate New York snow pictures are scary as all get-out. I filled thermoses with hot water and hot coffee, and got out the oil lamps, and charged all the flashlights. It's my superstition that these things keep the power on, once it sees that we are prepared.

I hope you keep the heat and lights on, Sue!

We have lovely blue skies, sunshine to beat the band but very cold temps! If we get a storm it may be later tonight, but keep in mind we already have about four feets of it, so if we get more, its gonna be r-r-r-ough!

You Porties have fun in it but stay close to the door.

Kisses,
Stella

Happy Birthday dear friend! My grandma grew up in Minnesota and tells stories of snow so high they could sled out from the second story windows.

I would love a wee bit of snow. :) g

Oh what fun to see them racing around in the snow. I can imagine it took a while to dry everyone off! Those are some great snow pictures. Makes me glad that I am living where I do today. Stay warm Sue.

Those pictures are INSANE!!! They almost don't look real! We are getting the blizzard tonight plus there are some fears that Lake Michigan may flood with 25 foot waves. Crazy weather!

Stay safe and warm!

You know how I feel about snow--But even I have a limit and I'm afraid your pictures remind me of what my limit is, and also remind me of when we lived in Alaska!

This latest snow storm is going to totally miss us--We're only going to be getting rain--Nothing like wet dogs!!!

Take care!!

Your photos remind me of the Sierra mountains in CA - our house at Lake Tahoe would have walls of snow taller than me lining the walkway to the door by this time of winter. I loved it.

I heard from Stella that it's your Birthday. Happy Birthday!!!! I hope that you're enjoying a cozy day with your dogs!
