Strange Human Behavior - Part One

Hi Everybody. I'm here today to discuss some very puzzling behavior  from my our humans. This is not new behavior, but we dogs have discussed it and we just don't understand why they act the way they do. Maybe some of you have seen the same strange things in your households and can enlighten us.
This is the situation. In our house we have several of these things.
These things usually sit quietly on the table or the desk and they don't bother anyone, but occasionally they make a funny noise and then our Mom or Dad stop whatever they're doing and go pick them up.

They hold the things up close to their heads and start talking. There's nobody else in the room, so we think they're talking to us even though we don't understand most of the words they're saying.

To show that we're paying attention and want to carry on this conversation, we start barking.

When we bark, Mom and Dad tell us to be quiet, so we stop barking while they talk. Then when they pause and seem to be waiting for us to answer, we bark again. This does not make them happy and sometimes Mom goes into the bedroom and shuts the door so we can't hear what she's saying.

So our question is, why are they talking to us with that thing against their heads and why don't they want us to answer? Do your humans do this, too? What do you do? We'd love to hear your explanations of this bizarre behavior.

Your pal, Fudge

My Mom is deaf so she doesn't hear the ringing and she doesn't pick it up. She has a typewriter phone (TTY) and types her message on it, but I can bark all I want because neither she nor who she is typing to can hear me. You ought to get your pawrents a phone like this. Its kind of fun.

Kisses,
Stella

Wow, this is so weird, cause we have those things too. When our mom talks to the machine we stare at her and follow her around. We are going to try screaming at her til she answers

We all think Stella is onto something there - we have the same problem here. AND the little bipeds always get in trouble because when Mom is holding that thing to her ear and talking, they always seem to need her right away:)

Same thing happens here. SHE yells at us if we bark back. But SHE does so many strange things, we just put that on the list.

We have some of those things at our house too and when mom gets on one of them it's a sign for us to start barking and acting up. This is how it's supposed to work, right?

Love ya lots

Mugsy was the WORST. He was jealous of the phone, we think. Sissy does have to go out on the deck if the Knight goes out there to talk, but that's about the extent of the phone behaviors.

When my next to youngest son, Ryan, was about 2, he dubbed that thing the "Hello" because when it made that noise, someone would say "Hello!" Thor would only bark once if no one picked it up, just to be sure we heard it. He didn't feel the need to talk back to us.

Hi Everybuddy, yes our peeps are just the same but we can't be bothered barking. Sometimes the phone rings and mum and dad can't even be bothered (probably too lazy) to even answer it. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory

As soon as my mom has finished talking to nobody with this thing against her head- I sit up and start to wag my tail and she knows I want a walk. It works every time. I agree though- humans are very very strange.....

We've observed the same phenomenon here, but we take advantage of mama's distraction to do stuff we're not allowed to do when she's paying attention to us like she should be doing ALL THE TIME. So take the lemons and make lemonade, PWD's.

That's such a pain when the humans do that, I just don't think they understand.
