Ancient Memories

Do you remember what you were doing 30 years ago today? I'll give you a clue. It was a Saturday. In Mexico, New York it was a lovely fall day, sunny but quite cool. It was also our wedding day.
We decided to get married in the morning at my Grandfather's farmhouse so we could enjoy the party all day. After the ceremony we followed a tradition at the time. When I was growing up in Mexico, many Saturdays we'd see a short parade of cars driving around town blowing their horns. Wherever we were, we'd stop and wave because it was a wedding parade. Was that a tradition other places, too? Do they still do it? I've never witnessed a wedding parade here in Missouri.

My cousin's two little boys, Luke and Jon, were in charge of distributing the little wrapped packages of bird seed to the guests and when we came out the door, we were pelted.
The adult guests knew what to do but I guess we forgot to tell the little boys because they didn't unwrap the packages but threw the whole thing at our heads, along with loose seed. Ouch!!
We ran to the car driven by our best man, Robin and maid of honor, Melissa. The rest of our attendants and a few guests got in their cars and we had a little parade thru town sounding the horns all the way. It was fun.
When we returned, it was party time. We had plenty of champagne for the adults who wanted to partake and sparkling cider for the kiddoes and the adults who didn't want alcohol. Jon, the little fellow in the red overalls was sure that he'd drunk too much cider and was drunk. He had to lie down and sleep it off. The power of suggestion!!
Then, of course, we had our cake cutting. Rob had designed our cake. It was chocolate with raspberry filling and white frosting. The layers were offset and we had a Romeo and Juliet music box on the top.
It seemed to be going well at first, but then it got a bit messy.
Aside from Jon's overindulging, a good time was had by all. Just as a wedding should be.
That's what we were doing 30 years ago today.

Congratulations on 30 years! It's quite an accomplishment. Shannon and Chris walked down our hill with about 60 or 70 of their wedding guests, to the reception venue; the little girls who live on the street were thrilled to see the bride, and traffic on the main road patiently waited for everyone to cross. Small town life is so nice!
